Louisville Stoneware has a long history, they are one of the oldest stoneware companies in the US. Jacob Lewis established the Lewis Pottery in 1815. Through the years this pottery has had several names like Bauer Pottery, & Cherokee Pottery. In 1938 John B. Taylor acquired the pottery and changed the name to JB Taylor Company. In 1970 John Robertson renamed it Louisville Stoneware, after the death of JB Taylor. Their specialty is decorating pottery with Kentucky Derby and Christmas themes. They also create personalized items and items specific for other vendors like Cracker Barrel. The clay used by the company comes from western Indiana, and may be up to 250 million years old. The company is still in business, now owned by Stephen A. Smith.
